Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity will join with representatives from Thrivent Financial to raise the walls on the first home under construction during the 2013 build season at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at 707 17th Street N, Moorhead.
This new home is a result of an alliance between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity, this alliance has resulted in thousands of decent, affordable homes across the country since 2005. Thanks to its 2.6 million members who own financial products with the organization, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is able to contribute to the improvement of communities like Fargo-Moorhead. The Thrivent Builds alliance also engages volunteers—members of Thrivent Financial, members of area Lutheran churches, such as this home’s partnering church Trinity Lutheran, and members of the community at large—to work alongside the partner families to build these homes.
The Habitat Family Selection Committee chose to partner with a family of seven members. A veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder on Social Security disability insurance and his fiancé along with their 5 kids, 3 with special needs, hope to move into the home this fall. “The family is working with Habitat for a hand up to purchase a home so that they can provide their family with a stable and secure environment,” said Habitat Executive Director Rob Rich. “This couple has already started to volunteer and complete their 250 hours as required by Habitat for partner families.”
The family is eager to finish construction of their new home. They will complete 500 hours of “sweat equity” helping to build it, a basic tenet of Habitat for Humanity. They will also repay a no-profit mortgage, illustrating Habitat for Humanity’s objective to give families a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”
The wall raising event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact Lake Agassiz Habitat for Humanity at (218) 284-5253 ext 2.
